Despite courses in French, Italian, Portuguese and Macanese food, to mention a few, Maggie’s first forays into cooking were in pastry. Having established Mag Kitchen and later Maquette, it was time to give her cakes their moment in the spotlight.
As with most things related to Maggie, the choice of name for La Magie came from a special moment with a friend in Italy that stuck in her memory.
An Italian writer friend, with a penchant for the mystic and a love for inspiring people, performed a magic trick on Maggie the first time they met, thus also sealing the fate on the name, La Magie- French for magic.
This very friend also left her with some words of wisdom that still resonate with the chef today: when you make people happy you will be happy.
Words Maggie completely identified with, having said, on numerous occasions, “When I see people really enjoying my desserts I feel happy”
Having made hundreds of cakes catering to every whim, from creations for friends’ boyfriends to events for big companies, the world of cake making allows the chef to indulge in the fun of childhood memories from Alice in Wonderland right up to present day pleasures, such as the cinema of Tim Burton and music.
Working in collaboration with outside cafes, there are plans to create signature ranges for selected outlets, all keeping in line with the philosophy Maggie has cultivated over the years: to make food in a playful, heartfelt manner, with heart and memory at the core of every creation.
As Maggie Chiang expands her skills, the playful little girl she once was is now simply doing what she does best, “When I was small my wish list was to be a chef or a designer”
Chef, designer and sharing knowledge and scrumptious food wherever she goes, this is about more than spoons and aprons; this is a tale about living the dream.
